Current Job Search Challenges and HR Life Hacks!


It is obvious to everyone that the labor market has dropped significantly, unemployment has increased, and the average salary has decreased. There are significantly fewer vacancies, and those who send resumes increased 2-3 times for each vacancy. Therefore, recruiters have time to view only 30% of the resume. In addition, employers seek to hire good specialists for less money, the average salary has decreased.

According to opinion polls, about 4.4 million people became unemployed during the quarantine. Another 3.1 million Ukrainians (17% of the labor force) were in a state of hidden unemployment: either switched to part-time employment or went on unpaid leave. Official statistics of the unemployment center report that at the end of August there were 488 thousand unemployed, which is 67% higher than in this period last year.

According to the personnel portal grc.ua, the most affected by the corona crisis and significantly reduced the number of vacancies are hotels, restaurants, tourist operators, beauty salons, and retail.

???? The problem is obvious, you can still write a lot here, but what to do is not entirely obvious.

???? Therefore, I will share here some tips and life hacks, both my own and those named by most HR specialists.

1️⃣ Differentiate your income. HR doesn’t talk about it, but I’ll say. That is, do not put eggs in one basket, but distribute your income to different sources. First, think about the possibilities of your own business, at least you can sell something by dropshipping, or tear off the online store of your own production. Secondly, invest your savings in what can bring passive income. It can be a small one-room apartment that you will rent out and receive income. At a minimum, a deposit with interest, as a maximum, buy shares. Financiers should be consulted here. Third, work for someone. Most people only think about one third option. The first two seem immense to many, but I’m very encouraging to think in this direction too. Well, you understand, if you have several sources of income, then losing one, you will not go bankrupt.

2️⃣ Expand the window of opportunities for yourself, namely the number of vacancies that are suitable for you. Don’t look for a job just as an accountant or educator. Prepare 2-3 resumes for different vacancies. To find these, write down all your “know” and “know”. Remember all the experience – it can be both volunteer and personal experience. Then you will prescribe different competencies that will help you compare them with the labor market and distinguish 2-3 suitable vacancies for yourself. Even better, take tests and counseling for career guidance to expand the pool of opportunities for yourself.

3️⃣ Active search is an alternative to passive.

  • Send your resume to your acquaintances and ask you to recommend to employers.
  • Find recruiters and let them know that you are in an active search.
  • Write a post on Facebook and LinkedIn about why and what you are looking for.
  • Send your resume to the companies you are interested in.
  • Subscribe to profile telegram channels.
  • Show yourself after the interview, politely writing: “Thank you for the meeting, glad to get to know your company. I’m waiting for your feedback.” After a while, you can call and ask about the results of the selection. The main thing is ethical, without pressure, just show yourself, keeping focus on yourself. There are too many candidates, and those who actively show themselves have a chance to be in a better field of view.
  • In the long-sighted perspective, I advise everyone to actively conduct their social networks in order to build a personal brand of you as a specialist.
