Does the employer read my social networks?

Oh yes) According to survey statistics, every second employer before a job offer checks a profile on social networks and every third will deny you work if your values differ from the company’s values.

Canadian TV channel CTV News Toronto reports the results of a new survey conducted by the international employment site CareerBuilder. The study involved approximately 1,000 recruiters and HR specialists.

According to its results, 70% of employers check candidates for their vacancies online – find and analyze profiles on social networks.

Moreover, 57% of the surveyed employers found a reason for refusing work on the personal pages of candidates – content that testified that a potential employee was not suitable for the position.

❓Why?

1️⃣ Interview does not allow you to get to know you from all sides. One hour meeting is not enough, so impressions about you are made not only from your resume or interview, but also from other sources. One of these is social networks. There you can read about your professional achievements, which will add weight to you if you write about such, and about your interests, and about your personal life.

2️⃣ Especially now, when the labor market is the employer’s market and the choice among those looking for work (apployers) has grown by 80%, the selection has become even more thorough.

In principle, most employers will say that hard skills are not the most important thing because they can be easily obtained. Softskils are what is really more important. This is your character, communication skills or your values that will suit this company. Therefore, social networks are a place where you can see your lifestyle, read what you care about, how you communicate, and in principle, make an impression of what you live. Of course, social media won’t tell the whole truth about you, but this is one of the puzzles that play a role today.

???? What exactly does the employer pay attention to in your social networks?

– In your photos. Are they decent? In general, there is a lot to say about you from your photos. Avoid provocative and unacceptable photos for a professional.

– To your honesty. If, for example, you told at an interview what a healthy lifestyle is, and in the profile the employer will find a bunch of photos from parties where there is alcohol and smoke from cigars, or you said that the most important thing for you is family, and in the profile – no family photo, then you understand what the disappointment of the employer will be. Of course, social networks are everyone’s business, but they should not be dissonate with how you position yourself.

– On the way you communicate. How do you respond to uncomfortable comments, don’t you insult other people. Avoid obscene language.

– For your interests and hobbies. You should have a life outside of work. A kind of work balance.

– On the subject of your publications. Especially avoid the rhetoric of discrimination or reposts from unverified sources. Also, the employer will pay special attention to how you speak about the past employer and how you treat the company’s competitors.

– Even for mistakes in your posts (especially if you apply for a content manager). And in general, literacy is appreciated.

– Groups you like. If there are professional direction groups among them, it will be a plus. It can also pay attention to your tastes in music. If they match, it’s also a plus.

Moreover, even if you have already got the desired job, you should not relax. According to CareerBuilder, half of employers (51%) check the profiles of their current employees, of which one-third (34%) imposed penalties and reprimands employees or fired them because of inappropriate content. So, in 2018, a kindergarten teacher was fired in the Rivne region for photos in a swimsuit published on social networks. She managed to resume work through the court, but the fact remains.
Therefore, always be vigilant in your statements and in the content of content on social networks.
